LATAM Airlines to Become South America’s First to Offer “Lie-Flat” Seats on Airbus A321XLR

LATAM Airlines has marked a milestone in Latin American aviation by announcing that its future fleet of Airbus A321XLR aircraft will feature a Premium Business cabin equipped with fully reclining (lie-flat) seats. This decision makes the group the first operator in South America to offer a long-haul comfort experience on narrow-body aircraft.

A Qualitative Leap in the Single-Aisle Experience

The airline has selected the VantageSOLO model, developed by manufacturer Thompson Aero Seating, to outfit its new long-range aircraft. The announcement, made during the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX), details that the Airbus A321XLRs will begin integrating into the fleet starting in 2027.

These aircraft will have a capacity of over 170 passengers, distributed across three classes: Premium Business, Economy Plus, and Economy. The introduction of this cabin aims to standardize the service level that the group currently offers on its wide-body aircraft, but on lower-density or longer-distance routes operated by single-aisle planes.

Configuration and Comfort in Premium Business

The new Premium Business cabin will feature a 1-1 configuration (two seats per row, one on each side of the aisle). This design guarantees:

For its part, the Economy cabin will maintain a 3-3 configuration and will be equipped with R3 seats from Recaro, designed to maximize space and ergonomics.

Technology and Connectivity: A Renewed Fleet

Beyond the seating, LATAM Group will incorporate a completely modernized onboard experience. For the first time in its narrow-body fleet, passengers will have access to:

Paulo Miranda, Vice President of Customers and Experience at LATAM Airlines Group, highlighted that the Airbus A321XLR will elevate the company’s value proposition by offering a consistent experience and strengthening its destination network by connecting South America with more distant points efficiently.

Growth Strategy and Operational Reach

The Airbus A321XLR is a key component of the group’s modernization strategy. Thanks to its fuel capacity and design, this model offers a range 50% greater than other members of the A320neo family. This technical characteristic will allow the airline to open new direct routes and bolster regional connectivity toward international destinations that previously required layovers or larger aircraft.

Currently, the group maintains a commitment to over 10 aircraft of this model. This order is part of a larger expansion plan, through which LATAM projects reaching an operational fleet of 410 aircraft by the end of 2026, consolidating its position as the leading operator in the region.

With deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027, LATAM Group is preparing to transform the mid-to-long-haul flight segment, combining the operational efficiency of the A321XLR with a world-class service standard.
