Ryanair has officially inaugurated its new operational base at Tirana International Airport, stationing four aircraft and projecting a 50% growth in passenger traffic for the 2026 summer season. This strategic expansion, backed by a $400 million investment, solidifies Albania as the fastest-growing aviation market in Europe.
A Historic Boost for Albania’s Connectivity
On Wednesday, April 1, Ryanair celebrated the opening of its Tirana base, following the commencement of operations on March 31. For the Summer 2026 season, the ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) will operate a total of 44 routes, 21 of which are new connections.
Key new destinations include Alghero, Dublin, Eindhoven, Genoa, Malta, Milan, and Naples. With this deployment, the airline expects to carry 4 million passengers, representing a record 50% increase in its annual regional traffic.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The opening of this base serves as more than just a connectivity upgrade; it acts as an economic engine for the country. According to airline data, this operation:
- Supports over 3,000 jobs in Albania.
- Creates 120 new high-paying direct positions for Tirana-based pilots, engineers, and cabin crew.
- Stimulates inbound tourism by offering competitive fares for both citizens and visitors.

Pro-Growth Policies and Modernization at Tirana International Airport
Ryanair’s rapid growth in Albania is a direct result of the “zero aviation tax” policy implemented by the Albanian Government, coupled with incentive schemes from Tirana International Airport (TIA).
Piervittorio Farabbi, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of TIA, noted that the airport has executed a €120 million capital expenditure (CAPEX) plan. This investment has been directed toward upgrading key infrastructure, terminal capacity, and airside operational efficiency to meet the demands of modern airlines, focusing on turnaround times and operational excellence.
Strategic Vision: Heading Toward 2030
Ryanair’s plans for the Balkan nation are long-term. Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, confirmed that the airline intends to continue its investment over the next five years, setting the following objectives for the year 2030:
- Increase the based fleet to 6 Boeing 737 aircraft.
- Surpass 6 million annual passengers.
- Operate more than 60 international routes.
This ambitious expansion plan is contingent upon the Albanian Government maintaining favorable fiscal policies and TIA continuing to offer low-cost incentives that stimulate traffic and tourism.
Launch Promotion
To celebrate this milestone, the airline has launched a three-day seat sale with fares starting from €21.99, available for immediate booking via its official app. This initiative aims to drive demand for the 21 new routes set to begin operations this summer.
