Air India has announced the opening of The Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco International Airport, consolidating a new phase in the global transformation of its premium experience. This space becomes the airline’s first proprietary, signature lounge outside of Indian territory, marking a milestone in its international positioning strategy.
A Strategic Hub for North American Expansion
The new lounge, located adjacent to Gate A1, will open its doors to the public this Saturday, May 23, 2026. The facilities span 3,300 square feet and have the capacity to accommodate up to 80 passengers simultaneously.
Access to this space will be reserved for passengers traveling in First and Business Class, as well as Gold and Platinum tier members of the carrier’s frequent flyer program, the Maharaja Club. Additionally, the venue incorporates an exclusive, restricted area designated for First Class passengers.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, highlighted the relevance of this project for the airline’s network:
“The opening of the Maharaja Lounge in San Francisco builds upon the recent launch of our flagship lounge in Delhi, marking the inception of a new generation of exclusive lounges for Air India. North America has long been a key pillar of our network, and our ongoing investments reflect this commitment and our ambition to introduce a new standard of travel experiences in the region.”
Functional Layout and Lounge Zones
The infrastructure of The Maharaja Lounge is segmented into specific areas designed to optimize passenger flow:
- The Aviator’s Bar: This space has been configured with an aesthetic inspired by speakeasy-style bars. It features a curated cellar of wines and whiskies, alongside a signature cocktail menu headlined by the Maharaja Manhattan—a twist on the classic drink that incorporates black pepper in honor of traditional Indian gastronomy.
- Social Zone: Located next to the bar area, this main section is designed to foster interaction within a highly connected environment. The furniture allows for group conversation dynamics tailored to the pace of an international hub, while simultaneously providing sections that safeguard privacy.
- Dining and Live Cooking: The catering area includes a selection of Indian and international cuisine. The service is structured around a hot buffet island, a cold dishes section, a beverage station, and live cooking stations.
- Private Zone and Tarmac View: Specifically engineered as a sanctuary for First Class passengers, the private zone offers an isolated environment for pre-flight rest or productivity. Both the seating sections in this area and the general Business Class lounge offer direct views of the airport terminal’s runways and taxiways.
With the commissioning of this facility, Air India advances the rollout of its new ground product across the most critical long-haul markets within its network.
