United Airlines Boosts Transpacific Network: Launches Unprecedented Route to Sapporo and New Chicago-Tokyo Narita Connection

United Airlines has announced an expansion of its operations to Japan for the upcoming winter season, becoming the first US carrier to offer direct flights from the continental United States to Sapporo, in addition to inaugurating a new route between Chicago and Tokyo Narita.

Unprecedented Connectivity to Hokkaido from San Francisco

Starting December 11, the airline will launch a seasonal winter service with three weekly frequencies between San Francisco International Airport and Sapporo Airport, marking a milestone in commercial aviation as the first direct link between the US mainland and the Japanese region.

Operations will be deployed utilizing Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. This route is strategically designed to capture peak winter tourism demand driven by world-class skiing, local gastronomy, and the massive Sapporo Snow Festival. Furthermore, the carrier’s global network will enable seamless connectivity for passengers originating from nearly 80 US cities through its San Francisco hub.

Consolidating the Chicago Hub with Flights to Tokyo Narita

In parallel, United Airlines will launch a new year-round, daily scheduled service between Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Narita International Airport, scheduled to begin on October 24. With this addition, the company will position itself as the only US carrier to connect Chicago non-stop with this major Japanese gateway.

United Airlines to Resume Direct Flights Between Houston and Caracas Starting in August

This new link will complement the daily flights the airline already operates to Tokyo Haneda International Airport from Chicago, diversifying schedule options for both corporate and leisure segments. The route will be operated using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner equipment.

Strategic Alliance and Asia-Pacific Connectivity Network

The new itinerary to Narita will serve as an efficient gateway unlocking single-connection access to 21 key destinations within the Asia-Pacific basin, combining the airline’s own network with that of its Joint Venture partner, All Nippon Airways (ANA).

According to Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines, the carrier provides superior flexibility and choice compared to any other North American operator flying to the Asian continent. The company’s operational footprint was clear during 2025, a period in which it transported more than 1.8 million passengers between both countries, surpassing the combined volume of all other US airlines tracking the market.
