Spanish carrier Volotea has reached a significant milestone at San Sebastián Airport by launching its first international connection to Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Italy. This new route is set to bolster connectivity between the Gipuzkoa region and the European market starting this coming September.
Strategic Expansion at San Sebastián Airport
Beginning September 21, the airline will initiate operations between San Sebastián and Florence. The flight schedule is strategically designed to capture both outbound leisure traffic and inbound tourism to Northern Spain.
Operational Details and Frequencies
The flight programming for this route will be divided into two phases during the current year:
- September and October: Two weekly frequencies, operating on Mondays and Thursdays.
- From November Onward: Two weekly frequencies, shifting to Mondays and Fridays.

In total, the airline has scheduled 58 flights for the remainder of the year, representing a capacity of nearly 9,000 seats.
Volotea’s Consolidation in the Basque Country
With the addition of Florence, Volotea expands its network to five routes from Hondarribia Airport. The Italian city joins the airline’s existing domestic destination portfolio:
- Palma de Mallorca
- Menorca
- Málaga
- Seville
- Florence (International)
Since launching operations in San Sebastián in June 2021, the carrier has transported approximately 342,000 passengers. This growth is supported by a robust 96% customer recommendation rate within the region.
“This connection provides an opportunity to offer affordable travel to the people of Gipuzkoa while simultaneously boosting the arrival of Italian tourists interested in discovering Northern Spain,” stated Gabriel Schmilovich, Volotea’s Chief Strategy Officer.
