Conviasa has reported a critical disruption to its commercial schedule affecting its Cancun-Caracas route. Venezuela’s flag carrier characterized the incident as an unscheduled diversion where corresponding operational clearances were not fully respected during transit.

According to the official statement issued by the airline, regular operations were inexplicably disrupted. This situation forced the aircraft to alter its original flight path and land in Jamaica, disrupting the normal execution of the flight operation.

The airline detailed the following irregularities:

  • Lack of Basic Assistance: Severe deficiencies were recorded in the provision of airport and ground handling services on the island.
  • Passengers Left in Limbo: Passengers on the flight remained in a state of uncertainty for more than eight hours.
  • Non-Compliance with Standards: Conviasa denounced that the care received failed to meet the international standards governing air transport passenger protection.

Institutional Rejection of Jamaican Authorities

Conviasa’s executive management expressed its strongest condemnation of the actions taken by the competent authorities in Jamaica. The airline argued that the island’s government failed to guarantee the minimum conditions for assistance, dignified treatment, or the operational support required for both the aircraft and its flight crew during the contingency. According to the company, these actions significantly worsened the situation and subjected Venezuelan citizens to unacceptable treatment.

Furthermore, the air operator fully exonerated its technical personnel, explicitly clarifying that these events are not attributable to its internal operations or its flight crew. Conviasa assured that the crew on board acted at all times in accordance with established safety protocols, preserving the safety and integrity of the passengers and the aircraft itself.

Diplomatic Context and Future Legal Action

In the statement, the airline linked the incident to a pattern of diplomatic behavior, placing on the record that Jamaica has maintained a hostile stance toward Venezuela. As a direct precedent to this stance, the airline cited the stripping of the Venezuelan state’s rights and equity stake in the Petrojam refinery.

Finally, the company reaffirmed its absolute commitment to safety and the defense of its customers’ rights. Conviasa announced that it will pursue all necessary actions and procedures before competent national and international bodies to clarify the facts and guarantee the protection of the affected passengers.
