Edelweiss Launches Direct Flights Between Zurich and Windhoek, Namibia
Swiss carrier Edelweiss has commenced direct operations between Zurich Airport and Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. This new strategic route strengthens connectivity between Europe and Southern Africa, utilizing its state-of-the-art fleet to meet the demands of both business and leisure travelers.
A Strategic Debut for African Connectivity
The inaugural flight, WK82, took off this Monday from Zurich at 10:15 a.m. with 285 passengers on board. For the launch of this route, the airline deployed its new Airbus A350, a model renowned for its operational efficiency and long-haul passenger comfort.
Prior to departure, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Swiss airport’s boarding gate. The event was attended by Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer; Rolf Hancock, Vice President of Aviation Development at Flughafen Zurich AG; and Matthias Lemcke, Europe Director for the Namibia Tourism Board, alongside the flight crew.

We are delighted to be able to offer our guests this exceptional travel destination nonstop from Zurich starting today,” said Bernd Bauer, CEO of the airline.
Frequencies and Route Outlook for 2026
With the addition of Windhoek, the carrier expands its network in Southern Africa, positioning itself as a key player in direct connectivity to one of the continent’s most attractive tourism and economic hubs.
The route’s operational schedule is planned as follows:
- Launch of operations: Two weekly flights, operating on Mondays and Fridays.
- Scheduled expansion (Mid-July 2026): Service will increase to three weekly flights.
- Peak connectivity period: The three-flights-per-week frequency will remain in effect until the end of October 2026, specifically operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
The consolidation of this route to Namibia reflects the airline’s long-haul network expansion strategy into high-demand emerging markets.
