Panama’s primary aviation gateway continues to solidify its position as the epicenter of Latin American connectivity. Driven by double-digit growth in both passenger traffic and cargo volume, the airport demonstrated highly dynamic operations and robust backing from the global airline industry during the first five months of the year.
Sustained Growth in Passenger Traffic
Tocumen International Airport recorded a cumulative total of 9,597,977 passengers handled between January and May 2026. This figure represents a notable 15% increase compared to the same period last year, translating to an additional 998,680 travelers passing through the Panamanian terminal.
Analyzing the monthly performance, the airport registered a total passenger volume of 1,983,874 in May 2026 alone. This operational volume is supported by a robust network spanning more than 90 international connections.
The true engine behind this traffic flow lies in long-haul connections and regional transfers:
- Transit Passengers: In May, 77% of the total passenger traffic consisted of transit or connecting passengers—equivalent to 1,519,380 travelers—reaffirming the country’s strategic value for global connectivity.
- Arriving Passengers (Deplanements): A total of 228,723 passengers entered Panama City, representing a 2% increase (+5,505 travelers) compared to May 2025.
- Departing Passengers (Enplanements): A total of 235,771 travelers departed from the terminal, reflecting a 1% increase (+3,040 passengers) over the same month last year.
Operational flow maintained steady consistency, averaging approximately 63,990 passenger movements daily, with peak air traffic recorded on Sundays, Mondays, and Fridays.

Dynamic Flight Operations and Commercial Fleet
In terms of aircraft movements, the airport logged a total of 74,587 arrivals and departures during the first five months of 2026. This volume represents a 12% increase compared to the January–May period of the previous year, adding 7,920 flight operations to Panamanian airspace.
The breakdown of flights by operational segment was as follows:
- Commercial Passenger Flights: Accounted for 89% of total movements.
- Cargo Operations: Made up 6% of the activity.
- General Aviation: Registered a 3% share.
- Other Segments: The remaining 2% was split among charter flights, military operations, and technical stops, among others.
Specifically in May, the terminal managed an average of 443 daily flight operations. This traffic was sustained by the steady activity of 14 commercial passenger airlines and 14 cargo carriers.
Connectivity Network and Leading Destinations
Currently, the airport directly connects Panama with 91 international destinations alongside one domestic route, positioning its network as one of the most competitive and extensive in the region.
In the cumulative ranking of origin-destination routes from January to May 2026, South American and US cities led passenger preferences:
- Bogota: Leads the market with 485,538 passengers carried.
- Miami: Holds the second position with 388,070 passengers.
- San Jose (Costa Rica): Records a volume of 359,537 passengers.
- Punta Cana: Follows closely with 357,513 passengers.
- Medellin: Closes out the top five with 340,454 passengers.
Air Cargo Business Maintains Upward Trajectory
Beyond passenger traffic, the logistics segment continues to show highly positive performance. From January to May 2026, the airport handled a cumulative 107,412 metric tons of cargo, marking a 10% growth (+9,729 metric tons) compared to the same period last year.
Looking at the monthly breakdown, 22,880 metric tons of freight were transported during May, representing a 9% increase (an additional 1,861 metric tons) relative to May 2025.
Strategic Vision
The general manager of the airport, José Ruiz Blanco, emphasized that these statistical results directly reflect the strength of Panama’s connectivity model and the terminal’s commitment to the national economy.
“The results achieved reflect the confidence that airlines and millions of passengers place in Tocumen as the region’s primary hub. We continue to strengthen our infrastructure, connectivity, and operational capacity to solidify Panama as a key link between continents, driving tourism, competitiveness, and development opportunities for the country,” Ruiz Blanco noted.
This sustained operational growth reaffirms the role of Panama’s main airport as a strategic hub connecting Central America, South America, North America, and Europe. At the same time, it consolidates its position as the premier gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, leveraging the development of tourism, international trade, and the country’s logistics sector.
