Lufthansa Technik has marked a strategic industrial milestone by officially celebrating the groundbreaking of its new 55,000-square-meter facility in Santa Maria da Feira, south of Porto. The project will strengthen the group’s global component repair network, positioning Portugal as a key aviation hub in Europe.
Global Expansion and MRO Focus
The new Lufthansa Technik Portugal plant—a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik founded in 2024—will be exclusively dedicated to aircraft component and engine parts repair. The parent company is widely recognized as the world’s leading provider of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services.
With a triple-digit million-euro investment, the group plans to significantly expand its global capabilities and consolidate its infrastructure network. The formal commissioning of this state-of-the-art complex is scheduled for 2028.
Economic Boost and Highly Skilled Employment
The establishment of this infrastructure will serve as a powerful engine for growth within the Portuguese labor and technological framework, backed by both local and national authorities:
- New Jobs: The project is expected to create up to 700 new highly skilled aviation industry jobs over the coming years.
- Expanded Employment Platform: The group already employs more than 500 personnel in Portugal and shares the long-term ambition of exceeding 1,000 direct jobs across its various business units.
- Investment Incentives: During the groundbreaking ceremony, the company signed the final financial incentive agreement for economic development alongside the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP).
Madalena Oliveira e Silva, President and CEO of AICEP, noted that this contract represents one of the most significant aerospace projects ever supported by the agency, delivering a solid vote of confidence in the country. Similarly, the Mayor of Santa Maria da Feira, Amadeu Albergaria, highlighted that this structural investment will open a new chapter of development and internationalization for the region.

Strategic Interest in TAP Air Portugal
Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Group, emphasized that this facility reflects a deep trust in Portuguese talent and positions the country as a pillar of European maintenance infrastructure outside the group’s traditional home markets.
Spohr explicitly linked this profound industrial commitment to the group’s strong interest in TAP Air Portugal, describing it as a natural extension of the partnership they have built over decades. From the consortium’s perspective, Portugal serves as Europe’s key gateway to South America, Africa, and the Lusophone world.
For his part, the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, attended the ceremony and reaffirmed the project’s value to the national strategy, asserting that the State is the primary stakeholder in ensuring the longevity of this economic and political relationship with Germany.
A Multidimensional Corporate Approach
Lufthansa Group’s deployment in Portuguese territory transcends pure technical MRO activities, involving other areas of innovation and corporate responsibility:
- Tech and AI Hub: The industrial roadmap includes the development of a new TravelTech center and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in northern Portugal.
- Social Commitment: The launch of the Associacao help alliance Portugal—Lufthansa Group’s social aid organization—was announced. This marks the first time the entity has established a headquarters outside Germany within the European continent.
- Airline Commercial Presence: Currently, seven of the group’s airline brands (Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss, Eurowings, and Discover Airlines) operate a combined total of 353 weekly flights to key Portuguese destinations, including Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira, and the Azores.
The groundbreaking in Santa Maria da Feira solidifies an execution phase led locally by Torsten Raabe, Managing Director of Lufthansa Technik Portugal, and Harald Gloy, Chief Operating Officer of Lufthansa Technik. With the incentive agreements signed and earthmoving operations underway, the consortium enters the active construction phase to meet technical delivery deadlines ahead of the plant’s entry into service in 2028.
