Philippine Airlines (PAL), the flag carrier of the Philippines, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to become the 16th member of the oneworld alliance. This historic integration will significantly bolster the alliance’s footprint in Southeast Asia, transforming regional connectivity with the rest of the world.
A Strategic Milestone for Asia-Pacific Aviation
The official announcement was made during a press conference at the 82nd International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The alliance’s governing board, comprised of the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of all member airlines, formally invited PAL to join as a member-elect.
Lucio C. Tan III, President of PAL Holdings, Inc., described this step as a “definitive and transformative moment” for the company, highlighting that the alliance will enable them to offer a world-class travel experience infused with the warmth of Filipino hospitality.

Route Network Expansion and Connectivity
The entry of the Philippine flag carrier will deliver immediate strategic value to the alliance’s global network:
- New Destinations: PAL will add 31 unique destinations within the Philippines and other international points.
- Regional Strengthening: The airline’s international network will complement the existing services of alliance members, meeting customer demand across Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia.
Robert Isom, American Airlines CEO and oneworld Governing Board Chairman, noted that the addition supports the group’s long-term strategic growth and strengthens connectivity in key markets across the Asia-Pacific region.
Exclusive Passenger Benefits
The integration of Philippine Airlines into the alliance will yield direct, reciprocal advantages for frequent flyers:
Loyalty Program and Mileage
Members of PAL’s Mabuhay Miles program will be able to earn and redeem miles and points across the entire oneworld member airline network. Likewise, customers of other alliance airlines will enjoy the same benefits when flying with the Philippine carrier.
Lounge Access and Premium Services
Eligible elite-status passengers will have access to oneworld Priority benefits, which include dedicated check-in and First Class areas. Furthermore, they will gain access to more than 700 premium airport lounges worldwide, including oneworld-branded lounges located at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Seoul Incheon International Airport.
Ole Orvér, CEO of oneworld, welcomed the airline, praising its global reputation, focus on innovation, and commitment to premium customer service. With the signing of the MOU, both organizations formally initiate the transition process toward full integration as an active member, consolidating the alliance’s global portfolio in high-growth markets.
