United Airlines Begins Starlink Deployment on Widebody Aircraft for Transatlantic Flights

United Airlines has operated its first widebody transatlantic flight equipped with Starlink’s satellite internet service. This milestone represents a key step in the carrier’s strategy to offer free, high-speed connectivity to its loyalty program members, transforming the inflight experience on long-haul international routes.

Transatlantic Debut of the Boeing 777-200

United Flight 14 from Newark to London aboard a Boeing 777-200 has become the airline’s first commercial passenger widebody transatlantic flight to feature Starlink technology. This aircraft is the first of nearly 60 widebody jets that the carrier plans to equip with the system this year, aiming to eliminate connectivity gaps and outfit its entire widebody fleet by next summer.

As the world’s largest airline across both the Atlantic and the Pacific, United will leverage Starlink’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This will guarantee highly reliable internet access globally, including over oceans, polar regions, and other remote areas that were previously inaccessible to traditional cellular or Wi-Fi signals.

Massive Rollout and Strategic International Routes

The airline currently has more than 400 Starlink-equipped aircraft in service, with projections aiming to equip nearly 1,000 aircraft before the end of the calendar year.

International travelers will begin experiencing this technological upgrade on Boeing 777-200s operating between United’s hubs in Newark, Washington D.C., Houston, and San Francisco, connecting to popular international destinations such as:

“United is changing what it means to stay connected on a transoceanic flight,” said David Kinzelman, Chief Customer Officer (CCO) at United. “Starlink delivers the same fast and reliable internet access we are all used to at home, but in the air at 35,000 feet, flying anywhere in the world.”

Operational Efficiency and Passenger Satisfaction

Since launching Starlink connectivity last spring, the airline has carried more than 18.6 million passengers on over 311,000 flights equipped with the technology, supporting 9.9 million devices. During this deployment period, customer satisfaction scores regarding inflight Wi-Fi nearly doubled.

Ankit Gupta, Chief Air Operations Officer at United, noted that the speed and scale of the installation are the result of a highly efficient program designed in direct collaboration with Starlink, successfully accelerating the transformation of the digital experience in the air.

A New Era in Inflight Entertainment

United currently features more than 167,000 individual seatback screens across nearly 900 aircraft, with plans to approximately double that figure as it takes delivery of hundreds of new aircraft and retrofits the interiors of its current fleet. The integration of Starlink will maximize this entertainment investment, simultaneously optimizing the experience on personal devices and seatback screens.

MileagePlus members onboard these aircraft will be able to access multiple features without experiencing severe lag:

Access to the Starlink Wi-Fi network will be completely free for United MileagePlus members. As part of the airline’s automated customer experience, passengers will receive a digital notification prior to departure confirming whether their scheduled flight is equipped with this next-generation satellite technology.
