Virgin Australia has confirmed that it expects to take delivery of its first Boeing 737-10 by late 2027, marking the beginning of the next phase in its fleet renewal program. The aircraft is set to become the largest asset in the carrier’s fleet, providing increased capacity and flexibility across its domestic and short-haul international route network.
Capacity Expansion and Regulatory Approvals
The airline holds a firm order for 10 Boeing 737-10 units. While the original delivery expectations align with the US manufacturer’s positive progress in securing regulatory approvals from United States authorities, the airline formally projects the arrival of the first aircraft for late next year.
Virgin Australia CEO Dave Emerson highlighted the strategic impact of the new addition: “The 737-10 will be the largest aircraft in the Virgin Australia fleet and will give us more capacity and more flexibility right across our network.”
Emerson added that fleet renewal represents the primary short-term tool for emissions reduction, building upon the operational benefits the company is already seeing with the smaller variant, the 737-8.

Three Years of 737 MAX Operations
As of June 2026, Virgin Australia marks three years of continuous operations with the Boeing 737 MAX family. The airline’s fleet currently includes 19 Boeing 737-8 aircraft in active service. Performance metrics regarding fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability compared to the previous generation (737-800) include:
- An estimated fuel savings of approximately 30 million liters.
- A reduction of more than 77,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emissions.
To bolster its operations ahead of the -10’s arrival, the carrier will receive seven additional 737-8 aircraft before the end of this year, bringing the total inventory for this model to 26 units.
‘Lake Centenary’: A Milestone for Fleet and Crew
The announcement coincided with a special event held at the airline’s maintenance hangar in Brisbane, where Virgin Australia team members and their families gathered for an up-close look at ‘Lake Centenary.’ This aircraft is not only one of the company’s newest Boeing 737-8s, but it also carries significant symbolic value due to the following milestones:
- It features a special red livery.
- It commemorates the 150th Boeing 737 delivery in the airline’s history.
- It represents the 100th 737 family aircraft within the current operational fleet.
- It features the names of more than 8,000 team members printed on the overhead bins.
Emerson emphasized that this aircraft symbolizes the fundamental role of human capital in the organization’s transformation.
Following the future arrival of the 737-10, the variant will operate alongside the 737-8 and the Embraer E190-E2 regional jets, establishing a next-generation ecosystem firmly focused on operational efficiency and passenger experience.
