At the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA), one of the aerospace industry’s premier global gatherings held outside London, Aerolíneas Argentinas finalized its most significant fleet renewal and modernization program in a decade. The initiative entails the phased introduction of 20 next-generation aircraft, boosting the flag carrier’s operational capacity as well as its domestic, regional, and international connectivity.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027 with the arrival of the deal’s first Boeing 737 MAX 8 and will proceed in stages through 2031.
Order Structure and Lease Agreements
The transaction was executed through finance lease agreements agreed with three of the global aircraft market’s leading lessors: Avolon, Aviation Capital Group (ACG), and AerCap.
The technical breakdown of the fleet additions comprises:
- 6 Airbus A330neos: Slated to renew long-haul intercontinental operations.
- 8 Boeing 737 MAX 10s: Targeted at reinforcing high-density domestic and regional routes.
- 6 Boeing 737 MAX 8s: Earmarked for the domestic and regional network (two aircraft already under contract and four in the process of acquisition).
The airline currently operates a fleet of 84 aircraft. The arrival of these new jets will allow the carrier to modernize 25% of its total fleet and 60% of its long-haul fleet. Furthermore, the framework enables Aerolíneas Argentinas to keep its fleet current and evaluate the eventual renewal or replacement of active lease contracts as they expire.

Onboard Product Evolution: Premium Economy Debut
Starting in the first half of 2028, the Airbus A330neos will enter service across the long-haul network featuring a three-class, 291-seat layout:
- 30 Business Class seats
- 24 Premium Economy seats
- 237 Economy Class seats
The introduction of the Premium Economy cabin marks the Argentine flag carrier’s debut in this mid-tier segment, aligning its commercial product with that of major global operators. Additionally, the plan includes a comprehensive cabin retrofit for the Airbus A330s currently in service.
Financial Autonomy and Economic Stability
A central aspect of the transaction is that the funding for the expansion plan will be generated entirely through internal resources. The company will support these financial commitments using operating surpluses achieved during the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years, periods during which it required no cash transfers or subsidies from the national government.
“Investing in a new-generation fleet is possible because we first succeeded in restoring Aerolíneas’ financial health. We are building an airline prepared to compete head-to-head with the region’s top operators—orderly, efficient, and well-positioned for any future scenario. The most fundamental shift was cultural,” stated Fabián Lombardo, President of Aerolíneas Argentinas.
For his part, Paul Geaney, President and Chief Commercial Officer of lessor Avolon, noted that he was “delighted” to partner with the carrier to support its fleet modernization program, with monthly lease payments formally commencing upon the delivery of each aircraft.
The formalization of these agreements at Farnborough reflects restored confidence among international manufacturers and lessors regarding Aerolíneas Argentinas’ management model. Through this framework, the addition of more fuel-efficient aircraft, and the overhaul of its international cabins, the carrier is positioned to increase its capacity by 10% and bolster its operational competitiveness in Latin America across the 2027–2031 period.
