Etihad Airways, the national carrier of Abu Dhabi, is in the final stages of negotiations to acquire 10 additional Boeing 787 aircraft, industry sources told Reuters. This strategic move, which could be formalized as early as this month, aims to bolster the company’s long-haul capacity during a period of robust market recovery in the Middle East.
Venue for the Deal: Farnborough Airshow
The highly anticipated announcement of the purchase order could take place as early as the upcoming Farnborough Airshow, the prestigious aerospace event scheduled for July 20–24 in the United Kingdom. However, industry sources remain cautious, warning that because negotiations are still ongoing in the days leading up to the event, the deal is not yet 100% guaranteed.
This potential transaction aligns with recent statements from Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer Antonoaldo Neves, who last month disclosed to Reuters that the airline was evaluating a double-digit widebody aircraft order, though he declined to reveal the manufacturer or the exact model at that time.

Operational Recovery and Geopolitical Context
The negotiating table and the Abu Dhabi carrier’s expansion plans have been reactivated following a period of necessary operational adjustments earlier this year:
- Previous Adjustments: Etihad was forced to trim its flight schedules last March due to spiking fuel prices stemming from the armed conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
- Market Resilience: Despite regional geopolitical volatility, air traffic volumes across Persian Gulf hubs are rapidly returning to normal.
According to a report issued by European aerospace manufacturer Airbus, Middle Eastern airlines are experiencing a solid financial and institutional recovery amid a fragile truce in the region.
Should the definitive contract be signed during the Farnborough expo, this order will provide a significant boost to both the Boeing 787 program and Etihad Airways’ growth strategy, enabling the carrier to modernize and inject greater flexibility into its global route network as international passenger demand stabilizes.
