United Airlines has officially announced its latest passenger experience product development: an exclusive row of Economy Plus seats on its new fleet of Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This configuration stands out by offering additional elbow room and direct access to a shared console table extending over the middle seat, which is blocked from reservation.
This new Economy Plus variant will be available for booking by the end of this year. The airline plans to systematically roll out this option across its entire firm order of 50 A321XLR aircraft, while simultaneously evaluating the feasibility of expanding this design concept to other models in its fleet in the future.
With this strategic move, the Chicago-based carrier is positioned to be the only airline in the United States to market this specific cabin layout variant. This launch aligns with its recently announced United Relax Row program, which will transform multiple rows of its Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 widebody aircraft into a couch-style surface starting in early 2027.
“We are investing end-to-end across our fleet, giving customers choice and value in every cabin. The XLR is our newest aircraft and not only offers direct-aisle-access suites with lie-flat seats in United Polaris business class, but now also includes these special seats in Economy Plus with extra legroom and elbow room. Our customers are going to love these new options.”
— Andrew Nocella, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at United Airlines.
Technical Details of the New Economy Plus Row
The layout and ergonomics of this cabin section have been redesigned to mitigate fatigue on medium-haul international flights. The physical specifications of the new product include:
- Fixed Center Console Table: A custom-designed table will be implemented, extending rigidly from armrest to armrest over the middle seat. It features a soft, leather-like textured finish and has two slots designed to securely hold beverages.
- Increased Lateral Living Space: By permanently blocking the middle seat, the transverse space available for window and aisle passengers is maximized, eliminating physical shoulder and elbow interference.
- Extra Legroom: This width benefit directly complements the additional three inches (7.62 cm) of legroom (pitch) that characterizes the standard Economy Plus product on the carrier’s Airbus A321XLRs.
Final commercial details, including the pricing structure for bookings in this premium row, will be formally revealed before the start of the sales phase scheduled for the end of this year.
Airbus A321XLR as a Premium Narrowbody Pillar
The interior engineering of United Airlines’ Airbus A321XLR has been designed to serve as the carrier’s most premium single-aisle aircraft. The model is set to elevate comfort standards on short- and medium-haul international routes.
The aircraft’s overall configuration is highlighted by the following technical and inflight entertainment (IFE) features:
- Premium Business Class Seats: 32 seats in total (16 more than the Boeing 757s they will replace).
- United Polaris Suite: Direct aisle access for every seat, full lie-flat capability, and an individual privacy door.
- In-Seat Entertainment: High-definition 4K OLED screens and wireless Bluetooth connectivity.
- Screen Dimensions by Cabin:
- United Polaris: 19 inches.
- United Premium Plus: 16 inches.
- United Economy: 13 inches.
- Additional Amenities: Oversized overhead bins for roll-aboard carry-on bags and a self-service snack bar located in the aft section of the economy cabin.
Operational Timeline and Flight Crew
United Airlines’ operational plans slate the Airbus A321XLR’s first domestic flights for this fall, aiming to complete crew induction and operational familiarization. Formal deployment for long-haul international routes and scheduled transatlantic services is programmed to begin in early 2027.
Regarding safety and cabin service, the airline will maintain a robust operational standard. Transatlantic A321XLR flights will operate with a crew of five flight attendants. This staffing level ensures the continuity of the same level of service and regulatory compliance previously executed on the Boeing 757 aircraft it is gradually replacing in the long-haul narrowbody market.
