American Airlines has unveiled a large-scale retrofitting strategy for its narrowbody fleet. The initiative encompasses both modifications to existing aircraft and new deliveries featuring refreshed cabin layouts, aimed at elevating hard-product standards for business and leisure travelers alike.
Premium Product Expansion: Increasing Capacity from 25% to 40%
As part of its interior reconfiguration plan, American Airlines will increase the proportion of premium-category seating (First Class and Main Cabin Extra) across its narrowbody aircraft, scaling up from the current 25% to approximately 40% over the coming years.
Adjustments by aircraft type:
- Airbus A319 and Airbus A320: A retrofit program is underway to add an additional row of First Class seating.
- Airbus A321neo: Existing and future fleet aircraft will be reconfigured to offer an expanded First Class cabin.
- Boeing 737 MAX 10: Future deliveries of this variant will enter service with a 24-seat First Class configuration.
- Main Cabin Extra (MCE): The MCE footprint will expand across most single-aisle aircraft, offering passengers extra legroom, priority boarding, dedicated overhead bin space, and complimentary beverage service.
- Refreshed Interiors: Cabins will undergo an overall redesign featuring larger overhead bins, updated seating, and enhanced mood lighting systems.

Next-Generation In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity
American Airlines will reintroduce seatback In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) screens across its entire narrowbody fleet. The rollout will begin in 2028 on new Airbus and Boeing deliveries as well as retrofitted aircraft, complementing the more than 140 long-haul aircraft currently equipped with seatback screens.
Fleet-wide installation is projected for completion by the early 2030s.
Technical specifications of the new IFE system:
- Large-Format Displays: Integration of screens among the largest available in the North American narrowbody market.
- 4K Resolution: Ultra-high-definition technology for video playback.
- Bluetooth Audio Connectivity: Direct wireless pairing for personal headphones at every seat.
- USB-C Fast-Charging Ports: High-speed power outlets installed at every seat.
- Personalized Interface: Tailored movie and TV show recommendations, along with real-time interactive flight maps and destination data.
- Wi-Fi Connectivity: The system will integrate with high-speed connectivity powered by Starlink, with installation on the single-aisle fleet set to begin in 2027.
Complementary Investments in Customer Experience
The narrowbody fleet overhaul is part of a broader modernization strategy across the airline’s ground and inflight touchpoints:
- Airport Lounges: Expansion of the Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club networks, alongside the growth of the “Provisions by Admirals Club” grab-and-go concept at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
- Inflight Catering: Addition of premium brands including Champagne Bollinger and Lavazza coffee.
- Digital Tools: Enhancements to mobile platforms for booking management, baggage tracking, and day-of-travel operations.
Through this strategy, American Airlines aims to deliver a consistent, competitive passenger experience tailored to current operational demands and passenger comfort expectations.
