Somon Air Takes Delivery of First Boeing 737-8, Launching the MAX Era in Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s flag carrier, Somon Air, has taken a major step forward in its expansion strategy with the delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX. The aircraft—a Boeing 737-8 variant—is the first of two jets under a lease agreement with Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) and marks the first 737 MAX family aircraft to operate in Tajik territory.

This milestone sits at the heart of the airline’s fleet modernization and renewal program, aimed at bolstering regional operations and expanding its international footprint.

Route Network Expansion: Eyes on Europe and Asia

The extended range and improved operating economics of the Boeing 737-8 will enable Somon Air to optimize its existing short- and medium-haul services across Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Furthermore, the operational flexibility of the new model provides the technical foundation to launch high-demand international routes planned by the carrier, including:

Abdulkosim Valiev, CEO of Somon Air, highlighted the strategic impact of the new arrival:

“Given Tajikistan’s central geographical location and the extended range capabilities of the Boeing 737-8, this fleet expansion offers Somon Air the opportunity to open new routes with improved economics, driven by the fuel efficiency of these new aircraft. Somon Air highly values its long-standing relationship with Boeing and looks forward to continued fleet growth through the addition of more efficient and modern Boeing aircraft.”

Speaking from the manufacturer’s side, Paul Righi, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India, and South Asia, reaffirmed the commitment to the carrier:
