Venezuela: Maiquetía Airport Outlines Operations for Temporary Terminals Installed Following Earthquakes
The Maiquetía International Airport Institute (IAIM) has unveiled the operational plan and infrastructure for the temporary terminals set to enter service in the coming weeks. This emergency measure addresses structural damage caused by a twin earthquake, aiming to sustain the nation’s air connectivity without compromising safety or passenger handling standards.
Modular Architecture and Operational Infrastructure
To replace the affected areas, IAIM has deployed a temporary complex comprising two departure terminals and two arrival terminals, designed to efficiently segregate and manage domestic and international traffic flows.
These facilities feature the following technical and capacity specifications:
- Domestic Departures Terminal: Spans an area exceeding $3,300\text{ m}^2$, equipped with 3 boarding gates and a capacity to accommodate 480 passengers simultaneously.
- International Departures Terminal: Covers an extension of $4,300\text{ m}^2$, featuring 4 boarding gates and an optimized waiting lounge for 780 concurrent users.
- Arrivals Terminal: A unified $2,550\text{ m}^2$ structure consisting of a single span internally subdivided to process domestic and international flights, which includes a $1,000\text{ m}^2$ waiting area.
The structures have been conceived under a rapid modular engineering scheme. IAIM detailed that these are reinforced metal modular structures, equipped with drywall internal partitions and polycarbonate exterior clenching. The roofs employ a combination of aluminum and high-resistance membranes, ensuring durability and weather protection.

Passenger Services and Airport Security Standards
Despite the transitory nature of the facilities, the airport authority has ensured the full integration of security screening and immigration control modules. Additionally, the infrastructure features essential services to guarantee user comfort and accessibility:
- Climate Control and Connectivity: Integrated air conditioning systems, free Wi-Fi network, charging stations for electronic devices, and food and beverage vending machines.
- Medical Assistance and Accessibility: Permanent medical services and full compliance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) through continuous ramps throughout the terminal pathway.
- Acceptance Policies: Pet transport management is maintained in compliance with current aviation regulations.
Runway 10R Rehabilitation
IAIM confirmed the completion of works on Runway 10 Right (10R), which underwent comprehensive rehabilitation and resurfacing, restoring the highest standards of operational readiness and safety required for commercial aircraft traffic.
With the commissioning of these modular structures, Simón Bolívar International Airport restores part of its operational capacity safely while final structural restoration projects are being planned.
