GE Aerospace Confident GE9X Mid-Seal Issue Will Not Delay Boeing 777X Entry into Service

GE Aerospace has ruled out that durability issues identified in the GE9X engine mid-seal will compromise the Boeing 777X program schedule.

Technical Resolution and Engine Certification Progress

Speaking at an investor conference hosted by Morgan Stanley, GE Aerospace Chief Financial Officer Rahul Ghai expressed confidence that this issue will not postpone the commercial debut of Boeing’s new widebody twinjet.

The American engine manufacturer disclosed in February that it was assessing a seal durability issue on the GE9X power plant. Subsequently, in April, the company announced that it had determined the root cause, was finalizing the technical fix, and did not anticipate any disruptions to the program timeline.

Boeing Faces Delays in Stabilizing 737 MAX Production

According to details outlined by Rahul Ghai:

  • Test Findings: Testing revealed that the mid-seal—a component responsible for joining the forward and aft sections of the engine—did not demonstrate the durability levels originally anticipated by the company.
  • Redesign and Integration: GE Aerospace redesigned the part and began shipping GE9X engines equipped with the updated component to Boeing starting in the third quarter.
  • Internal Validation: The manufacturer holds a high degree of confidence in the redesigned component following internal testing, having already integrated it into production-line engines.

Regulatory Roadmap and Next Steps with the FAA

The approval process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is being conducted across two parallel regulatory tracks:

1. Certification of the Redesigned Component

GE Aerospace expects formal FAA certification of the redesigned seal in the coming months.

2. Flight Test Continuity and ETOPS Evaluation

The original seal design remains fully valid and airworthy for ongoing certification flight testing, including the prerequisite approvals required for Boeing to commence Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS) flight test trials. Concurrently, the redesigned seal intended for serial production aircraft is being processed through an independent FAA certification track.
