Singapore Airlines Named “World’s Best Airline” at 2026 World Airline Awards

The global air transport industry gathered this Friday at the iconic Langham Hotel in London for the 2026 World Airline Awards gala ceremony, hosted by international air transport rating agency Skytrax. Widely regarded as “the Oscars of the aviation industry,” the awards were established in 1999 and operate independently and impartially, with all survey and event costs fully covered by the organizers.

In this year’s edition, Singapore Airlines secured the top spot in the rankings following an exhaustive audit and passenger satisfaction survey, dethroning previous winner Qatar Airways, which slipped to second place. The podium was rounded out by Cathay Pacific Airways in third, followed by ANA All Nippon Airways in fourth, and Turkish Airlines closing out the elite top five.

Meanwhile, Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, noted that this marks the sixth time in the awards’ history that Singapore Airlines has claimed the top accolade, alongside triumphs in the World’s Best Economy Class and World’s Best Economy Class Onboard Catering categories.

Accolades Across Premium Cabins and Ground Services

The ceremony recognized standout operational performance and product excellence across the globe:

Qatar Airways: A nine-time winner of the flagship award over the event’s history, the carrier clinched four top-tier honors this year. It secured the title of World’s Best Business Class for the 13th time, alongside World’s Best Business Class Lounge for its Al Mourjan Business Lounge – The Garden, Best Airline in the Middle East, and the inaugural award for World’s Best Onboard Wi-Fi, introduced for 2026.
Air France: Swept the first-class sector, taking home awards for World’s Best First Class, World’s Best First Class Lounge Dining, and World’s Best First Class Amenities, while also picking up Best Airline in Western Europe.
Cathay Pacific Airways: Captured the titles for World’s Best Cabin Crew and World’s Best First Class Lounge for its refurbished The Wing Lounge. Ronald Lam, Cathay Group CEO, reiterated the airline’s commitment to invest approximately HK$150 billion toward fleet modernization, cabin retrofits, lounge infrastructure, and digital innovation.
EVA Air: Earned a triple crown with World’s Most Family Friendly Airline, World’s Best Premium Economy Class, and World’s Best Premium Economy Class Amenities, while reaffirming its Skytrax 5-Star rating for the 11th straight year.
STARLUX Airlines: Won World’s Cleanest Airline and retained its Skytrax 5-Star carrier status for the second year in a row within its six-year operational history.
ANA All Nippon Airways: Ranked fourth globally and walked away with the award for World’s Best Airport Services.
Hainan Airlines: Took home awards for World’s Best Business Class Amenities, Best Airline Staff in China, and Best Airline in China for the 15th consecutive year.
Turkish Airlines: Clinched World’s Best Business Class Onboard Catering, Best Airline in Southern Europe, and was named Best Airline in Europe for the 11th time.
Plaza Premium Group: Claimed World’s Best Independent Airport Lounge Group for the 10th consecutive year, placing three lounges (Rome Fiumicino, London Heathrow, and Dubai) inside the global top 10.
EGYPTAIR: Won World’s Most Improved Airline on the back of its comprehensive turnaround and fleet renewal program.
oneworld: Named World’s Best Airline Alliance, reclaiming the mantle for the first time since 2021 and securing its fifth historical win.

Low-Cost Sector: Global and Regional Dominance

The low-cost carrier (LCC) segment showcased continued operational strength among major incumbents:

AirAsia: Crowned World’s Best Low-Cost Airline for the 17th consecutive year, extending an unbroken streak dating back to 2010.
Scoot: Took the title of World’s Best Long Haul Low-Cost Airline for the sixth straight year.
Vueling: Part of International Airlines Group (IAG), notched its first-ever victory at the World Airline Awards after being named Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe.
IndiGo: Named Best Low-Cost Airline in India and South Asia for the 16th time.
JetSMART Airlines: Picked up Best Low-Cost Airline in South America for the fourth time.
Allegiant Air: Named Best Low-Cost Airline in North America for the third consecutive year.
flynas: Retained Best Low-Cost Airline in the Middle East for the ninth year running.
FlySafair: Voted Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa.
FlyArystan: Operating under Air Astana Group, won Best Low-Cost Airline in Central Asia and the CIS for the fourth straight year.

Regional Winners

The Skytrax presentation further reflected carrier competitiveness across key geographical markets:

South America: LATAM Airlines reaffirmed its regional footprint, winning Best Airline in South America and Best Airline Staff Service in South America.
Central America and the Caribbean: Panama-based Copa Airlines was named the best airline for the 11th consecutive year and received the award for Best Airline Staff Service in the region.
North America: Air Canada was declared Best Airline in North America, also taking home Best Business Class Lounge Dining for its Signature Suite at Toronto Pearson International Airport. In the leisure market, fellow Canadian carrier Air Transat retained the title of World’s Best Leisure Airline for the eighth year.
Europe: In addition to Turkish Airlines’ continental victory, Spain’s flag carrier Iberia earned Best Airline Staff Service in Europe under the umbrella of its “Vuelo 2030” transformation strategy, while LOT Polish Airlines was recognized as Best Airline in Eastern Europe / Central Europe.
Asia and Oceania: Qantas Airways won Best Airline in Australia / Pacific and Best Airline Staff Service in Australia / Pacific. Bangkok Airways retained both World’s Best Regional Airline and Best Regional Airline in Asia for the 10th year running. Malaysia Airlines claimed Best Airline Staff Service in Asia and placed third globally in the cabin crew category.
Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia: Saudia repeated as winner of Best Airline Staff Service in the Middle East. Across the African continent, Ethiopian Airlines was named Best Airline in Africa for the seventh consecutive year (marking nine total wins), while RwandAir clinched Best Airline Staff Service in Africa. In the Central Asia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, Air Astana swept Best Airline and Best Airline Staff Service, while Azerbaijan Airlines won Best Regional Airline in Central Asia and the CIS.
