Discover Airlines is scheduled to take delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 in June 2027, ushering in a new chapter for the expansion of its long-haul network out of Frankfurt. Incorporating the type will allow the carrier to assume routes previously operated by parent carrier Lufthansa, add new destinations such as Belize City, and initiate a comprehensive widebody fleet renewal.

Deployment Timeline and Initial Long-Haul Destinations

The carrier’s induction schedule for the incoming widebody follows a phased rollout designed to ensure operational reliability before full commercial deployment:

  • Initial Crew Familiarization Phase: During its first weeks in service starting in June 2027, the initial A350-900 will be deployed on a high-frequency short-haul route dedicated to crew training and line familiarization.
  • Long-Haul Entry into Service: Following the familiarization period, the aircraft will be rostered on an established long-haul route from Frankfurt with multiple weekly frequencies—likely Calgary or Orlando. Both routes operate up to daily, supporting schedule stability, low operational complexity, and a consistent passenger experience.
  • Second Aircraft Induction: With the second A350 delivery slated for December 2027, the airline will launch scheduled service to Central America beginning December 14, 2027.

Takeover of Costa Rica Route and New Belize Link

Effective December 2027, Discover Airlines will officially take over Lufthansa’s scheduled route between Frankfurt and San Jose, Costa Rica (serving Juan Santamaria International Airport).

The leisure carrier will increase service from five to six weekly flights. In an update to its route network, two of the six weekly frequencies will operate as a triangular routing, incorporating an onward tag flight between San Jose and Belize City. With this tag segment, Belize City joins the carrier’s international network as an entirely new destination.

Widebody Fleet Transformation and Expansion

The addition of the A350-900 is central to a broader fleet simplification and generational rollover at Discover Airlines.

The airline currently operates 15 Airbus A330-300s. Just this week, the carrier withdrew its final Airbus A330-200 from revenue service, retiring an airframe approximately 22 years old. This strategic phase-out cuts operational complexity and sets the foundation for a standardized cabin product.

By the summer of 2028, Discover Airlines expects to take delivery of its third and fourth A350s. These initial four airframes are aircraft currently flying for Lufthansa out of its Munich hub, which will bring Discover’s widebody fleet to 20 aircraft by mid-2028. In subsequent years, nine additional A350-900s are scheduled to join the fleet, progressively replacing the incumbent A330-300s.

Intercontinental Reach and the “Ocean Blue” Cabin

The extended range of the A350-900 will unlock distant leisure markets previously outside the technical performance envelope of the existing fleet, opening access to destinations across South America, Central America, Southern Africa, and Southeast Asia. Parallel to the fleet transition, Discover Airlines will begin retrofitting its Airbus A330-300 fleet over the coming year with its new long-haul cabin product, dubbed “Ocean Blue,” expected to roll out on a steady monthly cadence.

Flights scheduled on the Airbus A350-900 will be updated and officially filed in global distribution systems (GDS) and booking engines over the coming months as the delivery timetable firms up.
