GOL Linhas Aéreas has confirmed it will suspend several of its key international routes to the United States and the Caribbean starting in February 2027. The decision comes as a direct response to financial pressures driven by surging jet fuel prices, which have forced the Brazilian carrier to reconfigure its route network.
International Network Adjustments: Affected Routes and Destinations
Effective February 2027, the Brazilian airline will implement service suspensions on direct flights connecting multiple strategic hubs in Brazil with North America and the Caribbean:
- United States Routes: Direct services to Miami and Orlando currently operating from Brasília, Fortaleza, and Belém will be suspended.
- Caribbean Route: Operations connecting São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport with Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, will cease.
The carrier confirmed it is actively optimizing its flight schedule, which encompasses both frequency reductions and the permanent termination of services across select routes. Commercial flights.
Impact of Jet Fuel on Operating Costs
The primary driver behind these cutbacks is the sharp spike in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs. According to the airline, expenses for this critical resource have surged dramatically:
- Doubling in Price: Fuel prices have doubled over the recent period.
- Cost Structure Weight: Jet fuel has grown to represent approximately 40% of the carrier’s total operating expenses (OPEX).
Facing mounting pressure on operating margins, the airline stated in an official release:
“Network planning is an ongoing and dynamic process in commercial aviation, carried out strictly in accordance with overall operational requirements, without any regional prioritization or bias by the Company.”
Despite the termination of these non-stop flights, GOL affirmed it will preserve travel options for affected passengers. Customers will be accommodated via connecting flights and global partner carriers, leveraging an extensive commercial network that includes more than 60 codeshare and interline agreements.
