Japan Airlines (JAL) Group has selected the Embraer E190-E2 as the direct replacement for the current regional jet fleet of Embraer E170s and E190s operated by its regional subsidiary, J-AIR.
The contractual commitment with the Brazilian airframer covers a total of 26 aircraft, structured as:
- 16 firm orders
- 10 additional purchase options
According to the carrier’s delivery schedule, initial deliveries are slated to commence during fiscal year 2029 (FY2029).
J-AIR operates an extensive domestic route network across Japan, anchoring its operations at its primary base at Osaka International Airport (Itami).
Mitsuko Tottori, Representative Director, President, and Group CEO of Japan Airlines, highlighted the significance of the agreement:
“We are delighted to welcome the advanced Embraer E190-E2 to the JAL Group fleet as our new wings—an aircraft that stands out for its superior environmental performance and economic efficiency. In the future society envisioned under the ‘JAL Group Management Vision 2035,’ the domestic route network serves as vital social infrastructure supporting regional economies and everyday life across Japan. By introducing this aircraft, we will sustain and develop a next-generation, sustainable air network that contributes to the nation’s future. We look forward to offering our customers a renewed and even more comfortable flying experience.”
Market Adaptation and the “JAL Group Management Vision 2035”
In recent years, Japan’s domestic air transport sector has experienced rapid shifts across its operating environment. Key contributing factors include softening corporate travel demand, long-term demographic shifts, and escalating operating costs driven by inflation and foreign exchange pressures.
In response to this landscape, the airline group is advancing structural reforms under its corporate growth roadmap, “JAL Group Management Vision 2035.” This strategy aims to solidify and expand a sustainable domestic flight network, recognized as essential social infrastructure for the country.
For J-AIR, which aims to establish itself as the most trusted and customer-centric airline for regional communities, integrating the E190-E2 serves as a cornerstone of JAL’s long-term fleet planning. The aircraft addresses future capacity demands and stringent environmental standards, securing the long-term viability of domestic operations while driving regional economic revitalization.
