Romanian airline Dan Air has formally filed for insolvency protection before the Ilfov Court to shield itself from creditors. Despite the legal maneuver, airline management affirmed that the proceedings will not disrupt its regular flight schedule.
Operational Continuity and Route Network
The carrier’s legal filing was formally registered on a Thursday; however, the court has yet to set a date for the preliminary hearing, according to aviation news outlet Boardingpass.ro.
Dan Air representatives stressed that commercial flight operations remain active across their standard operating bases and destination network:
- Departure Bases: Scheduled flights out of Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport and Bacău George Enescu Airport.
- European Routes: Scheduled service to major destinations including London, Dublin, Turin, Paris, and Dortmund.
- Intercontinental Flights: Services to select destinations across the Middle East.
Operational Background and Financial Standing
Founded in 2017, the carrier achieved a key milestone in 2023 by becoming the first scheduled airline to operate out of Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport. However, operational disputes surrounding operating hours at the facility prompted the carrier to relocate its primary operating base to Bacău.
The move to seek insolvency protection follows a significant surge in overall liabilities:
- 2024 Liabilities: 90 million Romanian lei (approximately $18,883,782 USD)
- 2025 Liabilities: 126.3 million Romanian lei (approximately $26,500,000 USD), according to the company’s financial statements.
Industry Headwinds in Romania: AnimaWings Precedent
Dan Air’s restructuring bid reflects broader financial turbulence sweeping the Romanian commercial aviation market, closely following mounting operational and financial strain at fellow carrier AnimaWings.
AnimaWings also initiated insolvency proceedings before the Bucharest Court, which dismissed the initial petition citing missing procedural documentation—a ruling that remains subject to appeal. In parallel, petitions brought forward by multiple creditors were severed into separate dockets, with a hearing scheduled for November 11, 2026.
This legal dispute had an immediate operational impact on the AnimaWings network:
- Grounding of Operations: Originally scheduled to run through October 25, the operational pause was later extended to November 15.
- Charter Capacity: Tour operator Christian Tour announced that affected charter flights originally contracted to AnimaWings would be sub-chartered to alternative air carriers, ensuring package-holiday itineraries remain protected.
- Subsequent Legal Filing: AnimaWings filed a renewed insolvency petition on October 20, 2026, with a court hearing set for October 28.
As the Ilfov Court prepares to schedule a formal hearing to review Dan Air’s restructuring petition, the Romanian airline sector continues to monitor both proceedings and the carriers’ ability to work through their debt restructuring without disrupting passenger connectivity.
