Iberia Express announced that it has achieved the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) environmental certification issued by the International Air Transport Association, IATA.

This is a voluntary IATA program that measures the environmental management of airlines, assesses the most relevant procedures and, following an audit, independently advises airlines to set a course to improve their environmental performance.

In this way, IATA accredits that Iberia Express complies with the development and basis of an environmental management system. This certification is equivalent to the ISO1400:2015 environmental certification and is valid for two years, with the airline currently focused on working on an updated and strengthened program to renew the certification in 2025.

“This IATA certificate endorses our strategy in the field of sustainability and encourages us to continue on the demanding path towards a more sustainable future,” said Carlos Gómez, CEO of Iberia Express. “For the company it is a very relevant milestone to be among the 40 airlines in the world to achieve this certificate.”

“On behalf of IATA, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Iberia Express on achieving IEnvA certification. This is a remarkable achievement that demonstrates their commitment to environmental sustainability. Iberia Express is a role model for the aviation industry and we are proud to support them on their journey towards a more sustainable future,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Chief Economist.

13% reduction in emissions per passenger-kilometer

Iberia Express has set itself the goal of minimizing its environmental impact, focusing especially on efficient operations and fleet renewal. It is committed to the IAG Group’s goal of reducing net CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030 and contributing to achieving zero net emissions by 2050. It is also committed to supporting, monitoring and demonstrating continuous improvement of its environmental performance.

Among the initiatives that have been implemented in recent years to make progress in sustainability, Iberia Express is in the process of renewing its fleet, replacing A321ceo aircraft with A321neo, which reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 18% and noise levels by 50%. Precisely thanks to this renewal of larger capacity aircraft, and aided by greater efficiency in operations and an increase in its occupancy factor, the airline has reduced emissions per passenger by 13% compared to pre-pandemic levels.
