One dead and 6 injured after roof collapse at New Delhi Airport
At least one person died and six were injured Friday when a portion of the roof of Terminal 1 at New Delhi Airport, India, collapsed following a night of heavy rainfall that has led to the cancellation of dozens of flights.
“At around 5:00 a.m., the canopy outside Terminal 1 of the airport collapsed,” the airport’s deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Usha Rangnani, told Indian news agency ANI.
“One person died and about six people were injured,” added the police officer, who said that all the injured are stable and that several teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on the scene.

All aircraft departures from Terminal 1 have been canceled until 14:00 (local time) and check-in counters have also been closed, New Delhi Airport said in a statement.
Although initially flights landing at that terminal remained operational for the first few hours, they were later moved to terminals 2 and 3, whose activity has not been affected, the airport added in a posting on the X social network.
India’s aviation minister, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, told the media that they would launch “a thorough investigation” to find the reasons for the collapse, claiming it was due to a technical problem aggravated by heavy rains in New Delhi.
It also announced compensation of 2 million rupees (about US$24,000) for the family of the deceased and 300,000 rupees (almost US$3,600) for the injured, reported EFE.
