Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Spain’s Air Europa have announced an expansion of their strategic partnership. This agreement is designed to enhance the passenger experience by offering a greater variety of destinations, superior quality services, and more efficient travel options.
Frequency increase and route expansion
Starting in the summer of 2025, Etihad Airways will double the frequency of its flights to Madrid, enabling two daily connections between Abu Dhabi and the Spanish capital. This increase will facilitate connectivity between Europe and Latin America, as well as between the Middle East and Asia, significantly expanding travel possibilities for passengers of both airlines.
Etihad Airways’ Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Arik De, stated: “We are in talks to establish a strategic collaboration that covers various activities, from expanding the code-share agreement and frequent flyer programs to the possibility of a wet lease operation with an Air Europa aircraft between Madrid and Abu Dhabi.”

Meanwhile, Air Europa’s CEO, Richard Clark, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion of the alliance: “We are pleased to extend our collaboration with Etihad Airways, which will result in even greater benefits for our customers. The launch of flights between Madrid-Barajas and Abu Dhabi will open up more connection opportunities between the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas, ensuring the highest standards of quality.”
Benefits for Frequent Travelers
Currently, both airlines have a code-share agreement and a joint frequent flyer program, allowing passengers to accumulate and redeem miles on flights operated by either company. With the expansion of the collaboration, Air Europa will consolidate its presence in the Middle East and Asia, while Etihad Airways will strengthen its connection with Latin America through the Spanish airline’s hub in Madrid.
