During the 2025 Mexico Tourist Tianguis, Volaris and Copa Airlines announced a codeshare agreement aimed at improving access to key destinations from Mexico to Central and South America.

What Does This Agreement Entail?

The partnership will allow passengers to combine flights operated by both airlines under a single itinerary, offering benefits such as:

  • Combined fares from both carriers
  • Checked baggage documentation to the final destination
  • Greater schedule flexibility
  • A single ticket for the entire journey

This eliminates logistical complications, reduces waiting times, and optimizes flight connections.

A Union of Complementary Models

While they will share routes, Volaris and Copa Airlines will continue to operate independently. Volaris will maintain its ultra-low-cost model, while Copa will continue to offer its traditional full-service experience. This diversity expands options for travelers, who can choose the type of experience that best suits their needs without sacrificing connectivity.

Panama as a Strategic Connection Hub

The alliance focuses on Volaris’ domestic routes in Mexico, which link to destinations in Central and South America through Copa’s operational hub in Panama City. This reinforces Panama’s role as a regional gateway and enhances the logistical value of its hub, considered one of the most efficient on the continent.

Holger Blankenstein, Executive Vice President of Volaris, highlighted that this is the Mexican airline’s first codeshare partnership with a Central American carrier: “This alliance between two leading operators in their respective markets encourages and strengthens connectivity across much of the Americas. Our customers deserve accessible, efficient, and high-quality service experiences. This collaboration makes that possible.”

Robert Carey, Executive Vice President of Copa Airlines, emphasized the importance of expanding the company’s presence in Mexico: “Volaris has a strong footprint in the country and represents an efficient value proposition. This alliance is key to strengthening our regional strategy and offering more options to and from Mexico, further integrating our Hub of the Americas®.”

Next Steps

The agreement is set to take effect in the second half of 2025, pending approval from regulatory authorities in Mexico and Panama. Once approved, tickets will be available for purchase through Copa Airlines’ official channels.

This partnership between Volaris and Copa Airlines promises to enhance regional air connectivity, simplifying travel and expanding options for millions of passengers across the continent. The biggest winner? Travelers, who will now enjoy more destinations, fewer complications, and better fares.
