Panama’s Copa Airlines announced this Wednesday the incorporation of its second aircraft dedicated exclusively to cargo transport, a 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF), with registration HP 1990W. This addition represents a 15% increase in cargo capacity, equivalent to 22 tons per flight, solidifying the airline’s strategy to strengthen its regional logistics operation.

Jaime Álvarez, Senior Director of Cargo and Courier for Copa Airlines, emphasized that having two dedicated freighters “allows for the consolidation of a more robust and reliable operation from Panama, which translates into greater competitiveness for the country as a comprehensive logistics hub.” According to the executive, this advancement not only reinforces the company’s response capability but also positions Panama as a key point for international trade by providing solutions that improve supply chain efficiency and contribute growth opportunities for the national economy.

New Destinations and Increased Strategic Frequencies

With this expansion, Copa Airlines Cargo projects it will transport up to 50 thousand tons of cargo annually. The incorporation of the second freighter will enable the opening of routes to Miami, Port of Spain, Barbados, Guayaquil, and San Pedro Sula, in addition to increasing frequencies on strategically high-value routes such as Bogotá, Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Mexico, Cuba, and Costa Rica.

This expanded network is designed to serve key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, perishables, agro-industry, and general air cargo, with a more competitive portfolio of solutions tailored to market needs.

Hub of the Americas: Efficiency and Connectivity

The Hub of the Americas in Panama continues to be the nerve center of this operation. With two aircraft dedicated solely to cargo, Copa Airlines not only optimizes connection times but also ensures greater operational flexibility and service continuity. This is essential for handling larger and more complex shipments in an increasingly challenging logistics environment.

The company highlights that this expanded capacity reinforces its commitment to regional connectivity and to positioning Panama as a strategic hub for air commerce on the continent.
