Farnborough Airshow: Philippine Airlines Bolsters Long-Haul Fleet With Commitment for Up to 20 Boeing 787-10s
Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced a commitment to acquire up to 20 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners as part of its fleet modernization strategy. The agreement, comprising an initial firm order for 15 aircraft alongside options for five additional airframes, aims to consolidate the flag carrier’s medium- and long-haul route network.
Once the contract is finalized, the Dreamliners will complement PAL’s existing widebody lineup, which currently includes the Boeing 777, Airbus A330, and Airbus A350.

Operational Efficiency, Range, and Passenger Experience
As the largest variant in the Dreamliner family, the Boeing 787-10 is engineered to deliver an optimal balance of payload capacity and fuel efficiency on high-density routes:
- Passenger Capacity: Seamlessly accommodates 300 to 375 passengers in typical multi-class configurations.
- Operating Range: Capable of flying up to 13,890 kilometers (7,500 nautical miles).
- Fuel Efficiency: Its composite architecture yields a 25% reduction in fuel burn and carbon emissions compared to the aircraft it replaces.
- Operating Costs: Delivers the lowest seat operating cost among widebody twin-jets in its category.
From an inflight product perspective, the Dreamliner’s advanced architecture introduces tangible cabin comfort enhancements:
- Panoramic Windows: The largest windows in commercial aviation, featuring electrochromic dimming technology.
- Air Quality: Higher relative humidity levels to mitigate cabin air dryness on ultra-long-haul routes.
- Gust Alleviation: Integrated turbulence detection and smoothing technology for a significantly more stable flight.
A Milestone in a Historic Partnership
The deal coincides with two key milestones for the Southeast Asian aviation sector. This year, Philippine Airlines celebrated its 85th anniversary as Asia’s first and oldest continuously operating commercial airline. Furthermore, the announcement reaffirms an 80-year commercial relationship between the carrier and the American OEM.
