Margarita Island Becomes Copa Airlines’ Sixth Venezuelan Destination
In a strategic move to boost tourism development and enhance air connectivity in eastern Venezuela, Copa Airlines announced on Tuesday the launch of its new scheduled route connecting the city of Porlamar with the Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International Airport in Panama. Operations will formally begin on November 26, 2026, with three weekly frequencies, expanding international transport options for residents of Margarita Island and travelers across the continent.
Network Strategy and Market Consolidation in Venezuela
The addition of Porlamar marks the Panamanian flag carrier’s sixth route in Venezuelan territory—following Caracas, Valencia, Maracaibo, Barcelona, and Barquisimeto—and stands as its second destination in the country’s eastern region. With this route launch, the airline projects raising its operational capacity to a total of 46 weekly frequencies between Panama and Venezuela. This positions the country as the fourth-largest continental market by number of served cities within Copa Airlines’ global network, trailing only the United States, Brazil, and Colombia.
From the Hub of the Americas in Panama City, passengers originating at Santiago Mariño Caribbean International Airport will be able to seamlessly connect to more than 85 destinations across 32 countries in North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
Schedules and Capacity
The new international service will provide an estimated additional capacity of 3,500 monthly seats (round trip). Flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays according to the following schedule:

Operational Adjustments and Contingency Context
The announcement comes during a period of operational restructuring for the carrier following seismic events on June 24, 2026. As part of its contingency plan—and following the temporary operational disruption at Simón Bolívar International Airport serving Caracas—Copa Airlines redistributed its network offer to maintain the nation’s air links. The carrier currently operates a total of 36 weekly frequencies across four key gateways:
- Valencia: 3 daily flights (21 weekly frequencies).
- Maracaibo: 7 weekly frequencies (1 daily flight).
- Barquisimeto: 4 weekly frequencies.
- Barcelona: 4 weekly frequencies.
- Porlamar: 3 weekly frequencies (starting November 26, 2026).
Roberto Pulido, General Manager for Venezuela at Copa Airlines, underscored the carrier’s longstanding commitment to the country over 28 years of uninterrupted presence:
“With the new route to and from Porlamar, Copa Airlines continues to demonstrate its steadfast commitment to Venezuela and its dedication to strengthening the country’s international connectivity… Setting aside the current contingency, in just six months of 2026, we reactivated operations across all 5 of our destinations in Venezuela, and in less than a year, we are launching service to a new city.”
Socioeconomic Impact and Sales Channels
The launch of this route is expected to directly stimulate the economy of Nueva Esparta State by driving inbound tourism and generating direct and indirect jobs across the aviation and hospitality value chains.
