Air Canada has officially endorsed the Canadian government’s announcement regarding the expansion of the bilateral air transport agreement with Nigeria. Following this regulatory milestone, the carrier confirmed its formal intention to launch scheduled service to Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport projected for 2027.
To bring this transcontinental operation to fruition, the airline has initiated regulatory filings with civil aviation authorities to secure the required commercial operating permits.
Mary-Jane Lorette, Air Canada’s Vice President of Revenue Management, Partnerships, and International Affairs, welcomed the updated bilateral regulatory framework and confirmed that the airline is awaiting the requisite operating authorizations to launch direct flights to Lagos during the scheduled upcoming year.

Commercial Impact and Community Integration
Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, underscored the significance of establishing a direct air link with one of the African continent’s primary economies:
- Non-Stop Connectivity: The establishment of a direct route catering to historic demand from the Nigerian-Canadian diaspora.
- Export Facilitation: Enhanced operational accessibility for Canadian exporters tapping into Nigeria’s commercial market.
- Social and Corporate Cohesion: Strategic linkage for families, transnational communities, and commercial partners.
Air Canada noted that final operational specifications—including flight schedules, assigned frequencies, and aircraft type deployment for the Lagos route—will be formally announced in due course. The finalization of the flight schedule remains subject to government regulatory approvals and the completion of administrative proceedings with Nigerian civil aviation authorities.
