Dominican carrier Air Century has unveiled its first Bombardier CRJ200SF in Santo Domingo, marking the airline’s official entry into the dedicated air freight sector and inaugurating a new phase of strategic diversification within its regional business model.

Fleet Addition and CRJ200SF Operational Specifications

The aircraft, registered as HI1139, is the first of two Bombardier CRJ200SF freighters acquired by the airline to link supply chains and production hubs across the Caribbean and neighboring markets.

Key technical specifications and cargo capabilities of the freighter include:

  • Maximum payload capacity: Up to 6,600 kilograms (approximately 15,000 pounds).
  • Main deck configuration: Accommodates eight pallet positions.
  • Cargo handling systems: Large cargo door and roller floor system engineered to handle palletized freight, containers, and bulk cargo.

Selecting this platform builds upon Air Century’s operational experience with the CRJ200 family across its passenger network. This fleet commonality enables the carrier to maximize operational synergies, drive economies of scale, and leverage its existing infrastructure, specialized flight and ground crews, and in-house maintenance capabilities.

Business Strategy: Nearshoring and Regional Hub Operations

The cargo expansion project took shape in 2024 following a strategic assessment aimed at diversifying revenue streams and reinforcing long-term operational resilience. The process required approximately 21 months from the execution of the letter of intent (LOI) to the physical delivery of airframe HI1139.

The official unveiling ceremony was held at the private aviation terminal of La Isabela International Airport, Air Century’s primary hub. The event was led by Omar Chahin Lama, founder and CEO of the airline, alongside Executive Vice President Carlos Jimenez, senior leadership from Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (AERODOM), civil aviation authority officials, and commercial partners.

During his address, Carlos Jimenez outlined the core pillars of the freight operation:

  • Dedicated contract services: Wet/dry lease and contract operations for global logistics integrators and express parcel carriers.
  • Feeder network: Scheduled cargo links catering to freight forwarders and consolidators.
  • Ad-hoc operations: On-demand cargo charters tailored to mission-critical timelines.

The carrier aims to capitalize on nearshoring momentum and the Dominican Republic’s strategic geographic location to bridge manufacturing, transit, and distribution hubs across Central America and the Caribbean.

Operational Background and Commercial Network

With nearly 35 years of continuous operations since its founding in March 1992, Air Century is the Dominican Republic’s longest-serving commercial airline.

The addition of the CRJ200SF freighter complements the airline’s core schedule of commercial passenger flights and executive charter services. Currently, the carrier’s scheduled passenger network connects its operational bases at La Isabela and Punta Cana international airports with destinations including Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Port-au-Prince, Curacao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten.

With the induction of this aircraft and the upcoming arrival of a second committed freighter, Air Century strengthens the technical infrastructure and operational capacity required to position the Dominican Republic as a regional logistics transfer hub.
