Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, this week began testing the EcoDemonstrator program for the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, a unique model on the market that aims to reduce carbon dioxide (Co2) emissions and environmental noise.

Boeing’s EcoDemonstrator program will test noise with approximately 1,200 microphones installed on the exterior and floor of the Boeing 787, with the aim of improving noise reduction capabilities, as well as detecting the likelihood of future quiet aircraft designs.

The test program is expected to last approximately ten days before Etihad Airways’ Boeing 787-10 begins operation in Abu Dhabi.

Collaborate with Boeing, Nasa and Safran

Boeing and Etihad Airways will work with industry-leading partners, including NASA and Safran landing systems, to perform aircraft noise measurements from sensors, both on the plane and on the ground.

The data will be used to validate aircraft noise prediction processes and sound reduction potential, including landing gear. In addition, a flight will be conducted during which pilots, air traffic controllers and an airline’s operations center will simultaneously share digital information to optimize routing efficiency and improve safety.

In addition, as part of Boeing’s ‘Confident Travel’ initiative related to efforts to reduce the spread of Covid-19, detectors will be tested with ultraviolet light to determine their effectiveness in disinfecting aircraft decks and cabins.
