As of this Thursday, August 20, it is no longer necessary to take your personal computer, electronic tablet or containers with liquids inside out of your hand luggage, because modern computers will electronically check every millimeter of the luggage and also the bodies of the passengers.
“We are using the latest technology to verify that the luggage that the person is carrying by hand is being checked at the highest level possible, using CT technology, as used in hospitals today,” said Lester Sola, director of Miami International Airport (MIA).
But there are more changes: From now on, you will not have to hand in your travel documents to the federal agent at the checkpoint, as a computer will do it faster and without direct physical contact.
Daniel Ronan of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) discussed these developments. “When passengers approach to have their documents verified, they are going to register their identification in our computer instead of giving it to the TSA officer to be returned to them. That could result in potential transmission exposure.
The modern equipment works with the same technology as the machines that perform CT scans in hospitals.
“It’s a three-dimensional image that offers the opportunity to see all the contents of that luggage. So there is no need to remove liquids, remove computers, remove electronic tablets,” explains Sola.
The new technology is the result of a partnership between federal authorities, the Transportation Security Administration and Miami International Airport.
