Two passengers were fined $1,000 each in Canada for refusing to wear a mask on board commercial flights to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the Transportation Ministry announced Friday.

These are the first fines inflicted in Canada since the adoption of a decree that obliges people to wear a mask on airplanes, except to eat, drink or take medicine, according to a statement from the ministry.

The two incidents that led to the fines occurred in June and July on WestJet domestic flights, one between Calgary and Waterloo, and the other between Vancouver and Calgary.

“In both cases, the crew … asked people several times to wear a mask during the flights, and in both cases, people refused,” the ministry said.
