Alaska Airlines purchases 23 additional 737 MAX 9 aircraft.

Alaska Airlines said Tuesday that it had amended its agreement with Boeing, under which it would buy 23 additional 737 MAX 9 aircraft, Reuters reported.

The latest move signals growing confidence in MAX aircraft following a 20-month safety ban prompted by fatal accidents. The deal is expected to increase the pace of the airline’s fleet shift to Boeing.

Alaska Airlines, whose 737 MAX backlog, including options and lease commitments, totals 120 aircraft, can exercise further options to purchase 15 aircraft with deliveries between 2023 and 2026.

In December, the airline had agreed to purchase 23 737 MAX 9 aircraft, an order worth about $2.96 billion at list prices before significant discounts.
