A judge issued a warrant for the arrest of businessman Miguel Aleman Magnani, founder of Interjet airline and a prominent figure in Mexico as the grandson of a former Mexican president and son of a former governor.

This was confirmed by a federal official familiar with the case who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on ongoing investigations. The official did not indicate the crime for which the federal prosecutor’s office is seeking the businessman, but local media indicated that it is fraud, Associated Press reported.

Aleman Magnani is president of Grupo Aleman, a solar energy company, and founder with his father of Interjet, a low-cost airline that was very successful for years but in 2020, since the beginning of the pandemic, faced serious solvency problems and is currently not operating.

Late last year, the government’s consumer protection agency issued an alert warning of “the risk of establishing commercial relations” with the airline, noting “repeated non-compliance” with its responsibilities.

The agency then added that Interjet had been affected by “the suspension of several international routes, the lack of payment to employees, the suspension of its license to operate international air service to Canada and tax liens on its bank accounts, assets and brands”.
