Empresa Argentina de Navegación Aérea, within the framework of the Air Transportation Modernization Plan carried out by the National Ministry of Transportation, installed a new Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Dr. Fernando Piragine Niveyro International Airport, in the city of Corrientes, for approaches to runway 20. This represents an important technological advance that increases the predictability of operations and ensures a higher degree of service availability.
An ILS system consists of a set of ground transmitters that emit signals that guide aircraft on their descent towards the runway, being very useful for its accuracy and safety, especially in scenarios of reduced visibility.

The installation of the new equipment included the replacement of all antennas, the construction of new concrete bases and the replacement of the protective huts. It also incorporates a DME signal transmitter, thanks to which crews heading to or departing from the airport can know their exact distance to the airport.
In addition, fiber optics and radio-link antennas were installed between the equipment and the control tower, making the communications system robust and duplicated. This allows air traffic control and technical service personnel to continuously check the operation of the system.
Once the installation was completed and the operation of the transmitters and antennas of the new ILS had been checked, aircraft equipped with special measuring equipment performed a series of approaches to the runway to verify the stability, accuracy and quality of the radio signals used by the system to guide the aircraft. Then, the necessary adjustments were made to ensure the maximum reliability of the signals and put them into service.
