Work on Lima Airport control tower and runway to be completed in July

Lima Airport Partners (LAP) announced Monday that work on the new control tower and second runway at Jorge Chávez International Airport, which serves the Peruvian capital, will be completed next July, to be put into operation by the state-owned Corpac in 2023.

At a press conference, airport expansion project manager Anton Aramayo reported that LAP is “95% of delivering the new control tower and second runway in July 2022 to Corpac (Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation),” EFE reported.

Corpac will be in charge of implementing the equipment and air navigation systems to start operations of these facilities in January 2023, the company said.

However, the new passenger terminal, built near the current terminal in the province of Callao, will start operations in 2025, with an area of 180,000 square meters and capacity to serve 37 million passengers per year as of that date.

“An investment of $1.6 billion is projected in the new terminal, plus $160 million to improve the existing terminal,” Aramayo said about the current airport that received 23 million passengers in 2019.

Between both terminals, Jorge Chávez airport will add a total of 270,000 square meters, the number of counters will rise to 228, the number of boarding gates to 89, boarding chutes to 51 and aircraft parking to 96, Aramayo specified.
