Copa Airlines flew with sustainable aviation fuel
Copa Airlines on Tuesday conducted a commercial demonstration flight using 06sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Flight CM303 to Panama was part of an aviation industry initiative, organized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Boeing, to use SAF or sustainable aviation fuel on selected flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), California. This initiative reaffirms the aviation industry’s and Copa Airlines’ commitment to sustainability and the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

Supplied by World Energy, who are pioneers in renewable energy generation and have the only PBS refinery in the Americas, located in Paramount, California, Copa purchased 39,000 pounds of PBS for flight CM303 on June 7, 2022, operated by a Boeing 737-MAX9 aircraft on the Los Angeles – Panama route. As a result of this initiative, which was carried out jointly with seven other airlines within the framework of the IX Summit of the Americas, a reduction of 472,500 pounds of CO2 emissions is reflected.
This flight takes place within the framework of various meetings held by the commercial aviation industry, with the participation of Copa and other airlines, to define strategies that contribute to the goal of achieving zero net emissions in commercial aviation by 2050.
Achieving the ambitious goal of zero net emissions by 2050 will require the entire industry, including governments, regulators, manufacturers and suppliers, to come together to ensure the supply and availability of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), the efficient use of airspace and investment in new aviation technologies, among others.
Aware of its role in the industry, Copa Airlines continues to implement initiatives aimed at efficient flight operations and fuel use, efficient waste management, replacement of single-use plastic products, among others, in order to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment.
