United announces direct flights between Washington D.C. and Cape Town
United Airlines announced Thursday its new direct flights between Washington Dulles Airport and Cape Town, becoming the first airline to provide nonstop service from the US capital to South Africa.
The Department of Transportation authorized the company to operate three weekly flights, in a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner that has 48 United Polaris business class seats, 21 seats in United Premium Plus and 188 seats in Economy, starting on November 17, 2022 (subject to approval by the Government of South Africa).

“We are delighted to further expand our offering in Africa with this first direct link between Washington DC and Cape Town,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. “These new flights build on our existing year-round service from New York/Newark to Cape Town; together they will provide a near daily pattern from the US to Cape Town along with connectivity to the wider region through our Airlink partnership.”
United will soon offer a total of 19 weekly flights to Africa; In addition to these new flights to Cape Town, the airline launched nonstop routes from New York/Newark to Johannesburg and Washington D.C. to Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria in 2021.
