Mexican airline Viva Aerobus and Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), announced Monday the signing of a new purchase agreement for one million liters of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ for the operation of all of the airline’s flights from Los Angeles International Airport to Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.
Neste MY SAF is a state-of-the-art fuel made from residual raw materials, such as used cooking oil or animal fat residues, meeting strict sustainability criteria. Thus, during its life cycle, this fuel manages to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil-based jet fuel and also reduces emissions other than CO2, including particulate matter.

The flights operated with SAF will begin in the second half of the year and each flight will use a 35% blend of this sustainable fuel. The total volume of SAF purchased will help Viva Aerobus reduce 2,415 tons of GHG emissions, which is equivalent, for example, to the emissions of 537 vehicles in the United States in one year.
“We aim to reduce our carbon footprint, a goal that requires broad commitment. Therefore, we are proud to increase our use of PAS under an alliance with Neste and will continue to take additional steps to adhere to best practices in sustainability, such as optimizing our efficiency in the use of turbosine,” explained Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus.
This is the second time the airline has acquired SAF from Neste. On June 15, 2022, Viva Aerobus completed its first flight operated with SAF produced by Neste from Los Angeles to Guadalajara, and this agreement is the next step in meeting its goal to further reduce its CO2 emissions.
