Avianca acknowledged and applauded the effectiveness of the measures adopted by the Civil Aeronautics Authority at Bogota’s El Dorado Airport between December 7 and January 9, which allowed it to provide a stable, consistent and quality service to users. After the entire industry faced challenges due to demand in certain time slots, the authority decided to give flexibility to the daily operation of the airport and prioritized scheduled aviation.
Avianca also joined the plan implemented by Aerocivil by implementing new procedures associated with the measures decreed in the Christmas Mission, in order to provide users with a better quality service.
With the implementation of the authority’s measures, together with the industry’s own efforts, a stable operation was achieved during the high season. In the case of Avianca, the airline reported an On-Time Performance (OTP) index of 83.87%, significantly better than that recorded during the days of November (77.48%) when the initiatives were not active. In addition, it is worth remembering that Avianca was the most punctual global airline in the world during 2023, according to Cirium, with an indicator of 85.73%.

The measures applied by the Civil Aeronautics were in effect until January 9, so Avianca considers it essential to apply new actions to maintain a consistent service.
“From Avianca, we suggest reviewing and activating measures to ensure that users continue to receive the best possible service. It is necessary to work with the authorities and industry players in the implementation of initiatives to prevent situations such as those we saw in November, which affected passengers of all airlines operating in Bogota. If El Dorado works well, the whole sector works well and travelers benefit,” said Gabriel Oliva, Chief Operating Officer of Avianca.
“Taking into account the need to ensure long-term sustainable service at El Dorado airport, it is important that the authority expedite the implementation of the 23 recommendations made by the IATA study. According to the technical study led by IATA, the capacity of El Dorado airport is 68 operations per hour,” Avianca said.
Among the 23 recommendations that would improve the airport’s capacity and provide a more consistent travel experience for users, some stand out, such as the reduction in aircraft runway occupancy times and the simultaneous use of both runways, among others.
