Iberia applauds expansion of Barajas to make it a major European hub
The president of Iberia, Fernando Candela, stressed this Friday that the investment in the expansion of the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport will allow it to play “in the first division” of the large European hubs.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced today during his visit to the Fitur tourism fair that the investment for the expansion of Madrid’s Barajas airport will reach 2.4 billion euros, which will allow it to increase its capacity to 90 million passengers by 2031, 28% more than the current capacity.

For Candela, this is “excellent news” which, together with the purchase of Air Europa by the IAG group, to which Iberia belongs, “make up the two conditions necessary for Madrid to really be a ‘hub’ that plays in the first European division”.
In his opinion, an excellent infrastructure, together with a network airline “with sufficient critical mass and with a sufficient number of destinations are the guarantee of success for Madrid”.
