Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) announced on Monday the implementation of completely free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout its fleet. This service, developed in collaboration with SpaceX and its Starlink technology, will revolutionize in-flight connectivity by offering passengers fast, low-latency internet at no additional cost. The gradual rollout will begin at the end of 2025 and will be available to all passengers, regardless of travel class.

Advanced Technology for Seamless Connectivity

Starlink, the world’s largest low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, will serve as the backbone of this new connectivity experience. Designed to provide global coverage, this technology ensures reliable internet access even in traditionally challenging areas such as the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, and the Arctic. These regions have historically experienced interruptions due to the limitations of conventional satellite systems.

“With this new technology, we are connecting our passengers to the world like never before. We are eliminating frustrating interruptions and marking the beginning of a new era in connectivity. Whether flying over the Atlantic or the North Sea, our passengers can rely on a stable, continuous, and fast connection,” said Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer of SAS.

Door-to-Door Connectivity

One of the highlights of this service is the continuous connectivity from the moment passengers board until they disembark. This marks a significant improvement over current systems, which only activate after takeoff and disconnect during descent. Additionally, compatibility with multiple devices will allow passengers to work, stay connected, or enjoy uninterrupted entertainment on their smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Jason Fritch, Vice President of Enterprise Sales at Starlink, SpaceX, stated: “We are excited to provide reliable high-speed internet across SAS’s entire fleet and enhance the onboard experience for both passengers and crew. Starlink offers connectivity that can match or even surpass what users experience at home, even in regions where stable service has historically been difficult to achieve.”

Sustainability and Efficiency

The design of Starlink’s aerial terminals will also contribute to SAS’s sustainability goals, as it is optimized to reduce drag and fuel consumption. This initiative underscores the airline’s commitment to leading the transition toward more sustainable air travel.

A Radical Change in Passenger Experience

The introduction of this service will not only enhance the travel experience but also transform how passengers perceive onboard connectivity.

“Door-to-door connectivity is not just an improvement; it is a leap forward in convenience and reliability. It gives our customers the freedom to work without interruptions, stay connected, and enjoy continuous entertainment throughout the flight,” Verhagen added.

With this initiative, SAS positions itself as an industry leader, setting a new standard in in-flight connectivity and ensuring an unmatched flight experience.
