Airbus and Panasonic Avionics have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic collaboration aimed at developing the new Connected Aircraft platform. This preliminary agreement, expected to be formalized later this year, will lay the groundwork for a fully revamped onboard architecture, with a focus on connectivity, digitalization, and the passenger experience.
Converix: The Technological Core of the New Platform
At the heart of this initiative is Panasonic Avionics’ Converix server, a cutting-edge hardware and software solution that will play a central role in Airbus’ vision for its Connected Aircraft platform. This technology will enable the creation of an open ecosystem of comprehensive applications and services, spanning from the aircraft to the ground and the cloud, while extending air-to-ground connectivity to more aircraft components.
The new system will not only manage onboard entertainment but will also facilitate the collection of non-critical operational data and passenger experience insights. Its architecture will be scalable, versatile, and equipped with significant storage and processing capabilities.
Tim Sommer, Vice President of Airbus’ Connected Aircraft program, emphasized: “Panasonic Avionics’ expertise as a global leader in IFE, combined with Airbus’ leadership as a manufacturer and integrator of end-to-end digital operations, brings together the best of both worlds. This will benefit both airlines and their passengers.”

Ken Sain, CEO of Panasonic Avionics, highlighted the shared vision of both companies: “Panasonic Avionics and Airbus share a commitment to innovation. This exciting and natural partnership, with Converix at its core, will unlock the full potential of the connected aircraft for airlines and their passengers in the years to come.”
Open and Neutral Platform: Total Flexibility for Airlines
A key aspect of the agreement is the platform’s neutrality regarding third-party solutions. This will allow Airbus, airlines, and other providers to develop a wide range of digital services without restrictions, including individual entertainment systems, tools to optimize cabin operations, or applications focused on ground efficiency.
Moreover, the solution will not be limited to Airbus aircraft: it will also be compatible with mixed fleets, giving airlines the ability to implement a single digital platform across their entire fleet, regardless of the manufacturer.
This collaboration marks a strategic advancement in the evolution of the digital aviation ecosystem. Airbus and Panasonic Avionics are betting on a more open, intelligent, and customer-centric connectivity model, with the goal of transforming how airlines operate and how passengers enjoy their flights.
