The Malaysian government announced this Thursday the suspension of the search for the remains of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in the Indian Ocean due to adverse weather conditions. According to Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook, operations will resume later this year.

Flight MH370 disappeared in 2014 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. There were 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Despite international efforts, it remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.

A Pause Forced by Weather

Minister Loke, quoted by the state news agency Bernama, did not specify the exact reason for the prolonged pause but indicated that bad weather in the southern hemisphere in the coming months is a determining factor. “I believe now is not the right season. Ocean Infinity has temporarily halted operations and will resume them later this year,” he stated.

Malaysia Airlines Resumes Direct Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Paris

Ocean Infinity, the company responsible for the underwater search, has not commented on the decision. However, it is known that the search covers an area of 15,000 km² in the southern Indian Ocean.

A Results-Based Agreement

The Malaysian government reached an agreement with Ocean Infinity under a “no find, no pay” scheme. If the company succeeds in locating the aircraft’s wreckage, it will receive compensation of $70 million.

A Wait That Has Spanned Over a Decade

Relatives of the victims have received the news with resignation. Kelvin Shim, whose wife was on the flight, said the delay does not surprise him due to seasonal changes. “We have waited for more than 11 years, so a few more months don’t make a difference… I can keep waiting,” said the 50-year-old man.

With the mystery of MH370 still unresolved, the international community remains attentive to any developments in one of the most complex searches in aviation history.
