American Airlines is taking a significant step forward in the travel experience by offering free onboard Wi-Fi on more than two million annual flights, beginning in January 2026. The connectivity will be available exclusively to members of the AAdvantage loyalty program and is sponsored by AT&T, marking a partnership between two Texas-rooted giants with a long history of innovation.
Which Flights Will Have Free Wi-Fi?
The service will be available on all American Airlines aircraft equipped with high-speed satellite connectivity provided by Viasat and Intelsat, covering approximately 90% of the airline’s fleet. Additionally, American is advancing the installation of high-speed Wi-Fi on more than 500 regional aircraft, aiming to complete the process by the end of 2025.
A Successfully Completed Trial
Prior to the official announcement, the airline conducted limited trials of free Wi-Fi on select routes. These tests allowed American to evaluate the service’s quality, which not only met but exceeded expectations in terms of performance and stability.

Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer of American Airlines, emphasized: “Our customers highly value staying connected while flying, whether to communicate, work, check social media, or enjoy their favorite streaming services. Together with AT&T, we are proud to offer this service at no cost to our most loyal passengers.”
AT&T and American: A Natural Partnership
The alliance between American Airlines and AT&T is no coincidence. Both companies share core values such as innovation and connectivity. Jenifer Robertson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Mass Markets at AT&T, highlighted:
“People want to stay connected at all times—whether to talk with loved ones, follow their favorite team, or catch up on that trending series. Connectivity opens a world of possibilities. We are proud to partner with American Airlines to make this possible, even in the sky.”
A Customer-Centric Strategy
The decision to offer free Wi-Fi is part of a broader strategy by American Airlines to enhance the customer experience at every stage of travel. Less than two months before the announcement, the airline appointed Garboden as Chief Customer Officer, reaffirming its focus on onboard connectivity and comfort.
With this initiative, American Airlines not only solidifies its position as a leader in in-flight connectivity in the U.S. but also reinforces its commitment to delivering a modern, connected, and passenger-centric travel experience.
