Iberia unveiled its “Flight Plan 2030” this Wednesday, a strategic project aimed at solidifying its position as a European leader in air connectivity and sustainability. The plan includes an investment of €6 billion and targets an annual profitability of 13.5% to 15%. With this initiative, the airline will not only renew and expand its fleet but also redefine the customer experience, add new international destinations, and build a new innovation hub in La Muñoza.
Fleet Expansion: More Aircraft, Greater Efficiency, New Destinations
Focus on Long-Haul Routes
Currently, Iberia operates 45 long-haul aircraft, but the Flight Plan 2030 aims to grow this number to 70. This expansion will feature modern models such as the Airbus A350, A321XLR, and potentially the A330neo, part of the latest IAG group order. The goal is to position Madrid-Barajas Airport as a competitive international hub, rivaling other major European airports.
Complete Renewal of Short- and Medium-Haul Fleet
The short- and medium-haul fleet will also undergo a significant transformation. Older aircraft will be replaced with A320 and A321neo models, renowned for their efficiency and reduced environmental impact. This move aligns with Iberia’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

New Routes for a Global Network
With increased capacity, Iberia will expand its destination map. The plan includes new routes to Toronto (Canada), Philadelphia (USA), and Monterrey (Mexico), in addition to recently announced destinations like Recife and Fortaleza (Brazil) and Orlando (USA). The airline will continue exploring opportunities across the Atlantic, reinforcing its key role in connecting Europe and the Americas.
A Fully Redesigned Customer Experience
Renovated Cabins and XL Overhead Bins
The Flight Plan 2030 includes a complete overhaul of long-haul cabins, focusing on enhanced comfort, visual appeal, and improved connectivity. For narrow-body aircraft, XL overhead bins will be added, increasing space for carry-on luggage.
Digital Transformation and Premium Lounge at Barajas
Iberia will invest in Artificial Intelligence, digitalization, and personalization, pillars that will deliver a more agile and tailored user experience. A new Premium Lounge will also open in Terminal 4 at Barajas, expanding and enhancing ground facilities for frequent flyers.
Iberia City: Innovation for the Aviation Sector
One of the plan’s most ambitious projects is the creation of Iberia City in La Muñoza, which will house the new corporate headquarters. This center will stand out for its focus on technology and aeronautical innovation, aiming to become one of Europe’s most advanced aviation hubs.
Job Creation and Economic Growth
The expansion in fleet, destinations, and infrastructure will generate an average of 1,000 new jobs annually throughout the plan’s duration. This growth will benefit not only the company but also the Spanish economy as a whole.
According to PwC, by 2033, Iberia will contribute:
- €19 billion to Spain’s GDP
- 250,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs
This represents a 42% increase compared to current levels, where the airline contributes €13.861 billion to GDP and supports 160,271 jobs.
Iberia Foundation: Commitment to Society
Alongside its business growth, Iberia will launch the Iberia Foundation in 2027, coinciding with its centennial. The foundation’s mission will be to maximize positive social impact in all the destinations it serves, reinforcing its role as a responsible corporate actor beyond business.
